Waste tires that are stockpiled in backyards and garages provide natural breeding grounds for insects, rodents and disease carrying mosquitoes. They also create a fire hazard which results in real danger to the residents and rescue workers. Don't let waste tires pile up, please dispose of them properly. The City of Modesto residents can dispose of their waste tires for FREE at any of the scheduled Waste Tire Recycling Events. The tires are recycled locally and made into many useful products! The City of Modesto is very proactive when it comes to closing the loop on recycling. The City has applied cape seals to several streets throughout the community using rubberized asphalt, a product made from recycled waste tires. Rubberized asphalt provides for long lasting road protection. Our latest addition is the installation of rubber sidewalks! Rubber sidewalk tiles are made from 100% waste tires and will put a bounce in your step. The tiles are tree friendly and knee friendly! Modesto has also used recycled tires for a pour-in-place groundcover at Creekwood Park, Beard Brook Park and George A. Rogers Park. Waste tires are ground up into small pieces and mixed with other products to form a soft and protective layer to protect children as they play on the various equipment. The groundcover also provides a surface acceptable for ADA requirements.

The City of Modesto is one of the first communities in the state to install rubber sidewalks! Rubber "tiles" are linked together in a framework to create a bouncy sidewalk that are easy on the knees! The tiles are 2" thick and are made from 100% recycled waste tires. Approximately 10,000 SF of materials were purchased and will be installed throughout FY 08/09. The tiles can be removed to allow for root work and then be reinstalled. Curious to try it for yourself? Take a stroll along Plaza Parkway or Jennie Street. Rubber sidewalks may be coming to your neighborhood soon!
